Toyota has introduced the 2026 GRMN Corolla, a new high-performance version of its GR Corolla hatchback, designed to deliver an even more engaging driving experience through increased engine output, improved aerodynamics and chassis upgrades inspired by motorsport competition.
Unveiled by Toyota’s GAZOO Racing (GR) division, the new GRMN Corolla has been developed under the company’s philosophy of “making better cars through motorsport.” The model was engineered with extensive testing at Germany’s famed Nürburgring circuit and through participation in Japan’s Super Taikyu endurance racing series, allowing engineers to fine-tune the vehicle for both racetrack performance and driver confidence.
According to Toyota, the GRMN Corolla represents the highest level of performance in the GR Corolla lineup. The vehicle was developed under the guidance of Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda, also known by his racing name “Morizo,” whose vision was to create a Corolla capable of thrilling driving enthusiasts while maintaining precise control under demanding conditions.
The 2026 GRMN Corolla will be manufactured at Toyota’s Motomachi plant in Japan and will be offered primarily in North America, Japan and Australia. Pricing and full specifications will be announced closer to its market launch.
Among the major upgrades is an increase in peak engine torque to 302 pound-feet, with engineers specifically improving performance in the mid-range engine speeds between 4,000 and 4,600 rpm to provide stronger acceleration when exiting corners. The car is also equipped with an intercooler spray system and enhanced cooling ducts to help maintain consistent engine performance during prolonged high-speed driving.
Toyota has also introduced a range of aerodynamic improvements derived from its racing programme. These include a vented hood, redesigned fender ducts, front side spoilers and an adjustable rear wing developed through extensive testing at the Nürburgring. The company said the enhancements improve stability, grip and overall handling, particularly at high speeds.
The suspension system has been comprehensively revised with exclusive monotube shock absorbers, rebound springs and specially tuned electric power steering to improve cornering stability and driver feedback. The car also rides on high-grip Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, while its all-wheel-drive control system has been recalibrated to provide better rear torque distribution and enhanced stability during aggressive driving.
Weight reduction also plays a key role in the vehicle’s performance. Toyota removed the rear seats and reduced the overall weight by approximately 66 pounds compared with the standard GR Corolla, improving its power-to-weight ratio and reinforcing its track-focused character.
Inside, the cockpit has been redesigned to create a more driver-focused environment. The GRMN Corolla features semi-bucket sport seats trimmed in black and red suede and synthetic leather, a flocked instrument panel to minimise reflections, carbon-fibre interior trim, unique GRMN badging and a dashboard bearing Morizo’s signature.
Toyota said knowledge gained during the development of the GRMN Corolla has also contributed to improvements across the wider GR Corolla range, demonstrating how lessons learned in competitive motorsport continue to influence the company’s production vehicles.
